About the Cantab: |
Poetry Slam at the Cantab Lounge: 2006 Team Bios The 2006 team was selected over a two-night, six-round slam of the top fourteen slammers in the Cantab Lounge. Three of the team members are experienced veterans of the National Poetry Slam, while two more will bring new voices to this year's NPS in Austin, Texas. About the members of the team: Adam Stone has done disgusting things for money. Waited tables, bartended, dressed as Oliver and handed out flyers, sold fudge at a Rennaisance Faire, shilled coffee, said nice things to people who didn't deserve it, said horrible things to people who didn't deserve it, and commited varying acts of slam poetry. This is his eighth consecutive slam team (though he's declined to attend the national event since 2003), and his fourth time representing The Cantab Lounge. He has hosted various venues across the country, and toured extensively with Morris Stegosaurus, as well as Grand Marnier's SlamAmerica. His poems have appeared in various lit zines, websites, and even The Boston Globe. He is currently both the Cantab Lounge's Champion of Champions, and Haiku Champion, and has been beating the title of Cape Cod's Spoken Word Poet Laureate, like the dead horse it is, since 2000. While he did attend college for a few years: first as a Deaf Education major, then an English major; The only degrees he holds are 98.6, which he thinks makes a heck of a slam score. From Harlem, NYC; an educator, entertainer and Patriarch. Low maintenance and High Impact. Having graced the stages of Prisons, Night Clubs, Churches, Colleges, High Schools and Fortune 500 Companies natonwide, 1two5 is the latest addition to the legacy great poetry from the Cantab Lab in Cambridge MA. Simone Beaubien, seven-year-veteran of the New England poetry scene, makes her home in suburban Massachusetts, working as an EMT and acting as SlamMaster of the Boston Poetry Slam at the Cantab Lounge. She's competed at three National Poetry Slams, three Ultimate Frisbee Club Championships, and two Pinball Fantasy touries, and has performed work related to all these events in colleges, bookstores, theaters, and bars up and down the east coast. Lifetime nerd and part-time athlete, Simone is a natural product of the sound of Boston poetry, bringing slam, sonnets, and storytelling to the poetry stage. Dawn Gabriel's been performing her poetry in front of audiences for more than ten years. She performed on Lollapalooza's Spoken Word stage in New England and New York, was a member of the 4th place Worcester slam team in 1997, the Providence team in 1998, and has been featured in The Seattle Poetry Festival, The Boston Globe Book Festival, and First Night. Dawn worked as an organizer for both the National Poetry Slam in 2000, and the Individual World Poetry Slam in 2005. This is her second year as a Cantab Lounge slam team member. Brian S. Ellis started writing poetry on Febuary 18th, 2004 and won his first slam on March 8th, 2006. The 2006 Cantab National Slam Team is, therefore, the first team he has ever been on. He's often been told that his poetry appeals most to those who do not find poetry appealing. He hopes to feature somewhere one day. You can see the team onstage every Wednesday at the Cantab Lounge.
