The Cantab Lounge: Latest News

Friday, December 20, 2007

Last night was our last show at the Cantab for 2007! Our open mic participants saw the old year off in style, as did our feature, Dasha Kelly; Dasha treated us to a great range of heavy/funnny/erotic, all delivered with panache and charisma. The last slam of the year was packed with go-getters looking to win a way into January's World Qualifier speed slam. At the end of the night, Oz came out $10 richer.

Next week: NO SHOW ON DECEMBER 26. The Cantab will be open, but we won't be there; enjoy a Wednesday off and maybe do some writing (or go have some experiences to write about). We'll be back in the basement at 738 Mass Ave. on Wednesday, January 2 for Roger Bonair-Agard.

...If you can't wait that long, though, you can always come visit The Boston Poetry Slam @ First Night! We'll be in Room 208 at the Hynes Convention Center from 7:30-11:00 p.m. on Monday, December 31. A $15 button from FirstNight.org is your ticket to see us, plus all the Boston's New Year's fun!

Saturday, December 15, 2007

As usual, good fun was had at the Champion of Champions Slam this past Wednesday: challenger (and former champ) Adam Stone took on returning champion Brian S. Ellis. Brian took the win in five rounds, upholding his title for another season. Open 8x8 slams start again next Wednesday.

Also next Wednesday: Dasha Kelly, multi-talented Wisconsin poet joins us for one night only in Boston. That's right, she's flying in just to see us! This will be your last Boston Poetry Slam fix until First Night, and your only chance to see Dasha, so don't miss it.

Thursday, December 6, 2007

James Caroline (that's Jme to most of you) pulled out all the stops for us last night with an incredible, emotional set. Special thanks to Jordan Michael Tavenner, who backed part of the set beautifully on guitar. Jme also released his new beautiful book, Neon Hospital; pick one up from the artist if you missed his feature.

After the feature, Adam Stone swept Sam Teitel for the season championship win in a mostly on-page slam. Next week: Adam will take on Brian S. Ellis in the Champion of Champions slam! The last time these two slammed, the tables were turned; now Adam will try to steal the title from Brian. Expect good fun, both new and old work, and genuine camraderie and rivalry from these two.

Friday, November 30, 2007

Last night, Chad Parenteau brought us a fine feature, full of playful and perceptive work. Don't forget to swing by Chad's home reading to say hello: Stone Soup Poetry every Monday, just down the street at Out of the Blue! Chad's feature was followed by our second semi-final slam in the 8x8 series... Unlike last week, every poet in the slam showed up. In the first rounds, Lonzelle swept Steve Subrizi, and, despite Charley Pope's recent tear on the slam scene, he was eliminated by Sam Teitel. Sam went on to win the whole shebang and the big twenty-five-dollar prize.

Next week: Cantab co-host and longtime regular James Caroline (Jme) brings us new and old poetry, as well as a little musical backing and a brand new chapbook! Afterwards, Sam Teitel and Adam Stone will slam for the season championship. It's gonna be packed in there, folks, so don't forget to get your name on the open mic list early.

Sunday, November 25, 2007

Another fine week at the Cantab, folks: Alix Olson and Karen G rocked their new anthology, Women Warriors: 35 Women of the Spoken Word Revolution, and brought us some unpublished work as well. The semi-final slam was won by Adam Stone by default! --so we had a just-for-fun open slam, which was won by Charley Pope.

Next week, we'll see fine local poet Chad Parenteau feature for us, followed by our second semi-final with Lonzelle, Steve Subrizi, Charley Pope, and Sam Teitel. See you there!

Saturday, November 17, 2007

New York City invasion! --Yup, it was only this past Wednesday when we saw Survivor and ShadoKat on the Cantab stage together, firing up our audience with the slam spirit that makes NYC famous. Not to be outdone, our local poets packed the slam and when the dust cleared, Sam Tietel had taken down Sean Conlon for the win. That completes this season's 8x8 series: our next open poetry slam will take place on December 19.

It'll be far from quiet in the Cantab next week, though. First, Alix Olson will take the stage (with at least one special guest or two...) on her tour to promote the release of Word Warriors: 35 Women Leaders in the Spoken Word Revolution. The night will cap off with the first semi-final slam in the series. Come out and celebrate your Thursday off from work by staying up late with us!

Monday, November 12, 2007

Last Wednesday, Rob C. came to us from Denver and was all that was promised: a rough-hewn slammer with a sportscaster's pacing and a soft heart all his own. The slam was jam-packed with folks on a road trip from Amherst: in an exceptionally fun slam, Charley Pope defeated Sean Conlon in the final round. Just one more open slam until semi-finals start, folks!

This week: get ready for John Survivor Blake and ShadoKat, just finishing up the last leg of their Justice for All tour. Sign-up for the open mic begins promptly at 7:30 --no sooner, no later-- so plan accordingly. See you there!

Thursday, November 1, 2007

Last night, my friends, might possibly have been the most hilarious night of poetry I have ever had the privilege to host at the Cantab Lounge. Considering the amount of dead poets we had present in the house, you'd think the evening would have been more macabre, but it was one hundred percent fun. We had standout performances and costumes all throughout the open mic, but the night's feature really was the capper to a truly fun, ridiculous, and educational(!) Halloween night...

Our Dead Poets Slam kicked off strong with Biggie Smalls (Casey Rocheteau) for the Tragic Mishap team and just kept rolling from there. Some of the favorite performances of the night were Federico Garcia Lorca (April Ranger) and Robert Browning (Tom Daley); a tip of the hat is certainly also due to Hunter S. Thompson (The Colonel) for Best Costume and Richard Brautigan (Sean Conlon) for Best Prop. In a controversial move (TWO Biggies?!) the Tragic Mishap team took the bout, and a great time was had by all. Special thanks go to Douglas Bishop for helping to coordinate and host the slam.

Next week: Rob C. from Denver. Come early to sign up for the open mic!

Thursday, October 25, 2007

Okay, Laura Moran was just plain awesome. If you were watching the World Series instead, folks, you could have just cut over to the Cantab after the fifth inning, as you know... And you would have got to see one of New England's own tearing up the the stage with great poetry performed well. "Bogarting the kiddie pool," indeed.

The slam was a hotly contested battle among five hungry young poets: Manchester's Jennifer Elisabeth was on a roll all the way to the finals, but local favorite Steve Subrizi took her down in the last round. Remember, all our slam winners this winter qualify for our IWPS tryouts in January and team qualifiers in April!

Next week: what's scarier than a night of poetry? Well, okay, according to your roommates, probably not much. But if you're looking for a good fright on Halloween night, come out to the Cantab for the Dead Poets Slam, where four pre-selected teams will dress up and slam for Eternal Glory (we really mean it this time!). It'll be Suicides vs. Deaths of Excess vs. Tragic Mishaps vs. Deaths by Natural Causes, and open mic participants are also encouraged to come and perform in costume as a favorite dead poet. Silly, educational, and just a little frightening: if you're too old to trick-or-treat, this is surely the place to be.

Thursday, October 18, 2007

Last night, we celebrated fifteen years at the Cantab by pitting the Old School Poets (Ryk McIntyre, Richard Cambridge, Michael Mack, Adam Stone) against the New School Poets (Brian Ellis, Jme, Sean Conlon, Dawn Gabriel) in a head-to-head grudge match poetry slam. Even with fixed judges, bad math, and a biased timekeeper, the old-schoolers schooled the new-schoolers 110.4 to 107.8. What an night!

Special thanks go to our celebrity guest judges: Steve Subrizi, Jeff and Ryan, Su Miller and Sue Savoy, Harry Leno, and first-timer Lila. A special sad farewell goes to Harry, who leaves us this week for parts unknown until 2009. Travel safe and come back to us, Harry.

Next week: baseball, schmasemall! Series or no Series, we'll be featuring Providence-turned-Seattle-turned-New-York poet Laura Moran. You don't want to miss this amazing writer and slammer. Come for the feature, stay for the open slam!

Thursday, October 11, 2007

Okay: poets hit by rocks, beat-boxing owls, and square dancing to e.e. cummings? Yup, Gary Mex Glazner, The Minister of Fun himself, was in town last night. We had a grand old time, then followed up the feature with a four-person slam. After three rounds, Cara Powers fell to first-time slammer Lonzelle in the finals.

Also, the bouts for the 10/12 NorthBEAST Regional at the Cambridge YMCA have been drawn:

    BOUT 1 (starts 8pm sharp!)
    Lizard Lounge
    Westchester, NY
    Worcester, MA
    Manchester, NH

    BOUT 2 (10pm or a little earlier)
    Cantab Lounge
    Providence, RI
    Wilmington, DE
    Lincroft, NJ

Come see the big show! It's at 820 Massachusetts Avenue (yup, just a block from the Cantab). Doors at 7:00, $7 to get in. See you there!

Thursday, October 4, 2007

So Danny Sherrard totally rocked the house last night; but what else can you expect from the 2007 National Individual Champion? Special thanks, to, to 6 is 9, who did a spotlight feature for us on his last night in Boston for business. How cool to have two of the 2007 individual finalists on our stage in the same night!

Meanwhile, back in the local scene, the slam filled up by 8:05 and was full of some absolutely killer matchups. Adam Stone eliminated Sean Conlon in the final round, earning the $10 and the last spot in the 11/21 semi-final slam.

Next week: old-skool slammer Gary Mex Glazner, plus another open slam! Also, don't forget our big show next Friday, October 12, at the Cambridge YMCA. Get your tickets now at poetrytickets.com!

Sunday, September 30, 2007

Oh, if you missed the Whale Revival show, you are SO SORRY right now. We forgive you, though. Here are some photographs of the event:

In the Viewfinder -- photos of Solomon Sparrow's Electric Whale Revival at the Paradise Lounge on 9.29.2007

2007 Individual National Poetry Slam Champion Danny Sherrard will be at the Cantab this Wednesday. Also, big fun NorthBEAST Regional slam at the Cambridge YMCA Theater on 10/12! See the schedule (or the notes in the right margin) for details.

Friday, September 28, 2007

Another packed night at the Cantab, folks: it was standing room only for Corrina Bain's feature of all new work. As usual, Corrina's command of language and heavy themes wowed the crowd... And paved the way for a mostly-ladies slam, where Sharyn Wolfenbarger elminated Joyce Jellison in the final round.

Next week: 2007 Individual National Poetry Slam Champion Danny Sherrard! And, if you want a preview of his work, look no further than this Saturday's event:

Saturday, September 29 at The Paradise Lounge
DOORS AT 6, SHOW AT 6:30!!
Solomon Sparrow's Electric Whale Revival!
That's Buddy Wakefield, Dan Leamen, Derrick Brown, and Mike McGee, with special guest Danny Sherrard.
Openers will be shira e. and the tiny tornadoes and Blair!

Tickets are $15 at the door for this all ages show.
ARRIVE ON TIME: WE WILL SELL OUT.

See you there!

Thursday, September 20, 2007

Last night, Duende brought us a stellar set, very tight poetry and musical work from Tony and Steven. If you missed these guys, you might still be able to get ahold of their recording of the night... Try asking at their CD release party on October 6 at Providence's Perishable Theater! Our open slam was packed full, as usual, and top honors were taken by St. Paul's 6 is 9, over local newcomer Patrick.

Our featured poet next week will be the amazing Corrina Bain, not long back from working in Mozambique. This show will be standing room only by 9:00, so show up early if you want a seat.

Thursday, September 13, 2007

We knew he was funny. We knew he was dramatic. We knew he was going to bring us an entire show --not a set of poems, a show-- complete with music, visual aids, and out-of-this-world sound. We kind of suspected he would be awesome, and we were right. Last night, Eric Urban (a.k.a. Alfonso Rigatoni) brought down the house with a full poetry/theater experience in a night to remember. Wow. Our packed open slam thereafter was won by veteran Nate Leland over rising rookie Carlos Williams, with plenty of other notables present and slamming.

Next week, we'll have another open slam; and these things are filling fast, so show up early if you want a spot! Heck, show up by 8:00 if you even want to get on the open mic, because we had thirty poets on the list by 8:05. Our feature next week will be Duende, a poet/bassist duo composed of Tony Brown and Steven Cafaro. See you there...

Thursday, September 6, 2007

You can always tell when the students are back in Boston: we had a totally packed house last night! Our open mic was filled with names we hadn't heard since spring, and it was such a joy to welcome everyone back to the Cantab. April Ranger put on a phenomenal feature for us, a great mixture of old work and new, funny, poignant, and quirky, much of it beautifully performed and all of it well-written. It only made it that much harder for challenger Adam Stone and reigning slam champ Brian S. Ellis to win the crowd's attention for the big slam that followed, but they rose to the occasion! After six rounds, Brian emerged the winner and still champion, while Adam lives to slam another day.

Next week, we'll welcome Alphonso Rigatoni (a.k.a. Eric Urban), longtime Worcester slammer and member of this year's inaugural Manchester Slam Team. Is he hilarious? Yes. Is he dramatic? You bet. Is his work well-written and well-performed? You know we wouldn't book him if it weren't true; come watch Alphonso put on a great show. After the feature, we'll start the open slams again, so bring three poems if you want to do battle with the other late-night diehards.

Monday, September 3, 2007

Last week, local poet Casey Rocheteau brought us a full feature of her dense and very original work. Special thanks also to Taylor Mali, who stopped by and treated us to a spotlight feature on the open mic. What a great way to finish off our summer season! The much-touted Host vs. Waiter season final slam went to Adam Stone, Cantab server extraordinaire, who took the slam 3-2 over SlamMaster Simone Beaubien.

Next week, Adam will advance to the Champion of Champions slam, where he'll challenge the reigning champ, Brian S. Ellis, in a best-of-seven head-to-head! First, though, we'll get a full feature from local writer and open mic regular April Ranger.

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

So, in the past two weeks, we've had two great musical poets feature: local star Marlon Carey and international touring poet and folk musician Blair. Both guys rocked the mic with totally different sound: Marlon brought us some oldies but goodies, as well as a few new hip-hop tracks, and Blair also brought out some classic work and then folked it up a bit with his guitar. Don't stop believin', Cantab.

The two semi-final slams were won by SlamMaster Simone Beaubien and Cantab waitstaff Adam Stone. Tonight, the two of them will face off for the season championship! First, though, we'll be treated to a full feature from Amherst poet Casey Rocheteau. See you there...

Friday, August 17, 2007

How great to be home... The venue gave the slam team a great welcome back this past Wednesday. Congratulations to Simone, Shira, Jme, and Brian on the team's semi-final finish at the National Poetry Slam.

Our feature this past week was Marlon Carey, slam poet and hip-hop sensation. Marlon, a past member of our slam team, opened his feature with a poem dedicated to the regulars of the Cantab. He followed up with some old favorites and a few new tracks from his upcoming album. Chris Johnson even joined in the fun with a two-voice piece. Great feature, Marlon.

After the feature, every poet scheduled for the semi-final chickened out! So the semi-final slam consisted of Chris Johnson (who was scheduled to slam in next week's semi) and Simone Beaubien (who had originally bowed out of this week's semi). Simone took the slam in three rounds, and she'll return to slam against next week's winner for the season championship on August 29.

More fun coming next week! Our feature will be the talented Blair from Detroit, who'll bring us his unique brand of slam/folk/opera. No, seriously; this 2003 national slam champ can do it all. Blair's feature will be followed by a semi-final slam, featuring (approximately) Trevor Byrne-Smith, James Lindsay, RainMaker, and Artie Moffa.

Friday, August 10, 2007

The slam team may be away, but the Boston Poetry Slam rolls on! This past Wednesday, Brockton poet Frank Miller was our long-overdue feature, and a packed eight-person slam was won by Jason S. over Sharyn W. Special thanks go to Ryk McIntyre, Artie Moffa, Spak, and everyone else who helped out to keep the slam humming while half the staff was out of town.

Next week: super-friendly and amazingly engaging hip-hop poet Marlon Carey features for us, with special guest DJ Muse. Plus, we'll have a semi-final slam with Shira Erlichman, Erich Hagan, Adam Stone, and Jamei Bauer.

Need your slam fix sooner? Check out the slam team's good news on our MySpace page!

Thursday, August 2, 2007

Last night, the 2007 Cantab Slam Team performed for a completely packed house. These slammers pull no punches, people: their one-hour, intense set was a mix of all kinds of work, including Cantab favorites and, of course, the performance work they'll take to the national stage next week. Thank you so much to everyone who came out last night to support the team.

You can keep an eye on the results of the National Poetry Slam at nps2007.com. You can also watch for the SlamMaster's Nationals blog on our MySpace page.

Oh, and the team goes to Texas, but the show goes on... Next Wednesday, Ryk McIntyre hosts the open mic and Brockton poet Frank Miller features for the crowd. If you can't be in Austin, I'm sure you'll be there!

Friday, July 27, 2007

It's been a hot July at the Cantab... Also, the weather's been pretty warm, too. Two Wednesdays ago, Mindy Nettifee held the audience spellbound with a remarkable range of work from her book, Sleepyhead Assassins. The slam that night was won by Artie Moffa, who advances to the second semi-final on August 22. Then, just a few days ago, Maze Forever and Ocean drove all the way up from Charlotte just to see us: no fooling! After a solid feature, the slam was won by Worcester Slam Team member Trevor Byrne-Smith over Carlos Williams.

Big show this week, guys: this Wedneday, the 2007 Cantab Slam Team will feature for the venue in a special extended set. This is your last chance to see Simone Beaubien, Shira Erlichman, Brian S. Ellis, and Jme before they board a plane for regionals and Nationals in Texas! The team will perform an extended set and release their new chapbook, Your Girlfriend Doesn't Like This Poem. Special $5 cover tonight to help fund the team's trip to the 2007 National Poetry Slam in Austin.

Sunday, July 14, 2007

Was your Fourth of July awesome? Here's hoping so... If not, I'm sure your Eleventh of July was, because Ed Mabrey, 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion, was our feature at the Cantab. Ed really busted out an amazing set, including a remarkable freestyle that took the audience's breath away. Ed, we are jealous, but you are invited back any time just the same. The hot-hot-hot slam that night was won by Christopher Johnson, who eliminated Omoisele Okoawo, his own coach on the Lizard Lounge team, in the final round!

This week, we've got a little surprise: Mindy Nettifee will fill in for Sean Thomas Dougherty, who had to cancel at the last minute. It'll be sad to miss once-ago Cantab regular Sean, but we've sure lucked out that Mindy will be in the area: an OC slammer with a recent Pushcart Prize nomination, Mindy comes strongly recommended by Victor Infante and Derrick Brown. This is her only New England stop between her New York City shows, so come catch her before she heads back out west!

Sunday, July 1, 2007

Good times at the Cantab these past two weeks, folks. First, Esme Vaandrager from Albuquerque finally made it down to our basement bar to feature; she brought us a lovely selection of work, packed with beautiful imagery to take your breath away. Then, last week, Geoff Trenchard of the Bay Area brought the house down with a hilarious and moving set. Last week's slam was won by Rainmaker, who stopped by to visit from New York. Thanks for visiting the Boston Poetry Slam, guys!

Next week: NO SHOW FOR JULY FOURTH! Come see us again on July 11 for 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion Ed Mabrey.

Thursday, June 14, 2007

I can't believe how many people we stuffed into the Cantab basement last night. Who knew poetry slam was so popular? More than 100 people helped raise money for the five NorthBeast slam teams in attendance. In return, the teams gave us a hotly contested bout with polished poetry and performance. If they look this good tonight, imagine how amazing these poets will be at Nationals in August! The home team took bragging rights for this match, followed by Worcester, Manchester, the Lizard Lounge, and Providence. The next scheduled regional match will take place at the Lizard Lounge on Sunday, July 8.

Next Wednesday, we'll welcome Albuquerque youth sensation Esem Vaandrager to feature at the Cantab. Come hear this young woman with remarkable smarts and unparalleled poise. Following the feature, we'll continue in our 8x8 series of open slams.

Sunday, June 10, 2007

Another two Wednesdays of stellar poetry: two weeks ago, Andrea Gibson and Katie Wirsing swung by on the New England leg of their tour, bringing us new work and old favorite from Denver, plus a few two-voice pieces! The open slam was won by Adam Stone. Then, last week, local favorite Artie Moffa featured for us for the first time; Artie presented the venue with a new chapbook, packed with poetic parodies of the 2007 Cantab Slam Team, and offering all proceeds to the team. Thanks, Artie! That night's packed open slam was won by Jamei Bauer.

This Wednesday: come out to cheer on and heckle your favorites at the NorthBeast Regional Team Slam! Teams from Worcester, Providence, Manchester, and the Lizard Lounge come to the Cantab to take on the home team in the season's first meeting for big bragging rights! Special $5 cover tonight to help raise money for all these slam teams.

Thursday, May 24, 2007

You thought the open mic was good before? Clearly, you'd never heard the Masters of Making Everybody Sound Incredible: namely, the Jeff Robinson Trio. Jerome Deupree, Blake Neumann, and SlamMaster Jeff himself stopped by on their way to their regular Sunday Lizard Lounge gig to say hello to the Cantab. There were plenty of highlights, but the best part of a night like this is having both Cambridge slam venues together on the same stage. Thanks for coming by, guys.

Oh, right, and after the open mic, we ran a little show we like to call the Champion of Champions Slam, a best-of-seven with reigning champ Adam Stone taking on challenger Brian S. Ellis. This was the THIRD TIME these guys had slammed for the title, so they decided to make it a little more interesting by adding themed rounds to the mix! Sure, anybody can have a slam and mix up the time limits... But who arranges a round where the poets each cover their opponent? Who runs a Cape Cod round?? Brian and Adam, apparently; at the end of eight rounds (because why have a seven-round slam when the poets can have at least one tie?) Brian walked away with the dual titles of Champion of Champions of the Cantab Lounge and 2007 Cape Cod Poet Laureate (which Adam claimed was his to give). What a fun, fun show.

Next week: holy criminy! Andrea Gibson and Katie Wirsing are coming from Denver! These ladies are good, good, good, and have an offical metric pantload of finals stage appearances to back them up. This will also be Katie's first time reading at the Cantab, so come on out and give the lady her first-timer hand. Also, open slams start again, so go ahead and put your name on the list to try for the $10 prize.

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Seriously, folks, you had to be there: if you weren't, you missed Jack McCarthy's spotlight feature on the open mic, Genevieve Van Cleve's hilarious and biting Texas commentary, and Susan B.A. Somers-Willett's heady and sweet portrait of New Orleans. You may also have missed a certain Houston senator's office number... Yeah, it was a good night.

Oh, and the head-to-head season championship slam was won by Brian Ellis, who dispatched an on-fire Nate Leland in only three rounds! The people have spoken: Brian will face off with Adam Stone next week in a special theme-round version of the Champion of Champions slam. Best of seven takes the title and the $100.

Our feature next week, of course, will be the amazing Jeff Robinson Trio, who will back our open mic with improv jazz. Want a preview? Stop by the Lizard Lounge this Sunday for their team finals and hang out to see the Trio back the open mic in their home venue.

Friday, May 11, 2007

A bittersweet Wednesday this week: on the open mic, we said goodbye to regular reader Carrie Rudzinski, who leaves us for London until next November. Then we said goodbye to our feature, longtime Cantab host Valerie Lawson, who moves to Maine this weekend! Fortunately, plenty of us have copies of Valerie's new book, Dog Watch, to keep her in our hearts even while she's so far away. Come and visit any time.

Next week, we'll see southern duo Genevieve Van Cleve and Susan B.A. Somers-Willett in a double feature. Expect great fun and surprises from this remarkable pair of writer/performers. We'll finish off the night by pitting our two eight-by-eight semi-finalists against one another: Nate Leland and Brian Ellis will face off for the season championship. See you there!

Wednesday, May 9, 2007

Last week, Chicago hip-hop artist and perennial National Poetry Slam competetitor Billy Tuggle brought us a solid set of thoughtful work. There's just nothing like walking out of the Cantab knowing you've heard somebody great you'd never heard before, is there? The semi-final slam that night was a barnburning three-loss knockout won by Nate Leland over Jess Del Balzo and Jamei Bauer. Congrats to Nate, who advances to the season championship on May 15!

Tonight: we know you've missed Valerie Lawson since she retired from hosting at the Cantab. How lucky to have her back for a full feature this evening! Valerie's set will be followed by the second semi-final in our eight-by-eight slam series.

Saturday, April 28, 2007

Finally, finally: after three years of working to get Barbara Adler into our venue to feature, we finally connected... And, boy, was it worth the wait. After our exceptionally good open mic softened up the crowd, Boston/Albuquerque transplant Adam Rubinstein warmed up the place with a fifteen-minute spotlight. Adam read from his newest book, Freshwater Dredge, a selection of poems about growing up in Wellesley, Mass. After that, we had the joy of listening to Barbara's wonderful selection of story-poems, touching on topics from singing monks to crab tribulations and plenty of remarkable ideas in between. Come back any time, Barbara!

Next week: Chicago hip-hop poet and B-Boy Billy Tuggle. He's on a marathon tour and this is his first trip to Boston, so come by and make him feel welcome!

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Psst! Barbara Adler at the Cantab tonight! Also...

SlamPlanet screenings tomorrow and Saturday in Somerville! Details:
Slam Planet: War of the Words
Directed By: Mike Henry, Kyle Fuller
Thurs, April 26 at 7pm, Somerville Theater (Davis Square)
Sat, April 28 at 4:45pm, Somerville Theater (Davis Square)

We saw this movie screened about two years ago and it's great fun for slammers and non-slammers alike. Here's a good opportunity to help out your friends who don't understand what the heck you do on Wednesday nights. The movie is directed by Mike Henry (you know, one of the guys running the National Poetry Slam this year?) and features Rachel McKibbons, Anis Mojgani, Andrea Gibson, plus Rives as the bad guy, among plenty of others you might recognize.

It's all part of the Boston Independent Film Festival, so you can support slam poetry and the local arts economy at the same time. Hope to see you there!

Sunday, April 22, 2007

Thanks so much to all those who came out for the final Doc Brown's Traveling Poetry Troupe feature. Watch for their next incarnation in the near future! The demo slam? Well, it was a demo, so it was won by everybody... But mostly by Dan Ames, who squeezed out Caroline Harvey for the win over Alex Charalambides, Spak, and Mark Palos. Oh, and the audience won! The audience always wins.

Who's out of poetry steam now that National Poetry Month is drawing to a close? Not us! And certainly not Barbara Adler, touring poet from Vancouver. After years of coaxing, we finally get her into the Cantab to feature. Highly recommended.

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Patricia Smith rocked the house last night. 'Nuff said. If you were there, you probably made mighty good friends with your seat neighbors, all stuffed up next to them like you were. Thanks especially to our open mic-ers who put up with a myriad of sound woes, and to Erich Hagan who lent us some really-for-real working equipment so we could have an amplified feature.

Next Boston Poetry Slam Show:

Special for National Poetry Month! Sunday, April 22, 2007
Swing by Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway Theater in Somerville for an all-ages night of poetry and fun. Michael Brown, author of four poetry books, national slam finalist, and member of a championship slam team, brought the poetry slam to New England in 1991. For thirteen years he hosted at the Cantab Lounge, then turned to doing theatrical productions of original poetry performed by local poets. The latest incarnation of Dr. Brown's Traveling Poetry Show will perform for one hour, followed by an all-star poetry slam hosted by Simone Beaubien. Confirmed slammers so far: Caroline Harvey, Brian Ellis, Erich Hagan, and The Spak.

Thanks to everybody who braved the weather to come out and see Marc Smith last night. We had a small but intense crowd, and every poet performed as though the house were packed! Also, the Jeff Robinson Trio was on, earning some heavy compliments from the Slampapi... And the night closed with a one-of-a-kind on-stage improv party with every poet and musician in the show, plus a few from from the audience. Wow: just wow.

Kicking yourself for missing it? You can still catch Marc this Sunday in Worcester at the Java Hut's weekly reading (see the venue links on the left for details). Or, if staying in for the weekend with a hot cup of April cocoa is more your style, rest up and come see Patricia Smith this Wednesday at the Cantab.

Thursday, March 29, 2007

An exceptional open mic last night, followed by an exceptional feature from 2006 team member Harlym125. 125 shared the stage with special guests Tony, Brian S. Ellis, Iyeoka Okoawo, and Adam Stone, as well as DJ Enigma spinning behind him. Definitely one of the most fun, varied, and danceworthy shows we've ever had at the Cantab!

The last open qualifying slam was won by Erich Hagan, who eliminated Jonathan Chin in the final round. Special shout-out to Tai Cunningham, the Lizard Lounge hostess with the mostest, who came out to watch and slam with us. Thanks also to DJ Enigma who stayed to spin between poets.

Remember, next week it's a $5 cover charge for THE BIG BIG SLAM. Come out and cheer and heckle your favorites as we elminate fourteen of them! The following poets are qualified to slam in Wednesday's 2007 Team Selection Semis:

Adam Stone, Douglas Bishop, Matt Gallant, Nate Leland, A.C. Abbot, Jonathan Chin, Dan Ames, Artie Moffa, Maxwell R. Kessler, Ayden Frost (Unseen the Poet), Francis Joseph, Liam Coughlin, Eric Darby, Jamei Bauer, Jess Del Balzo, Liz Kramer, Emily Griffin, 1two5, Jme, Brian S. This past Wednesday, Chicago's Molly Meacham brought us a set of solid poetry, much to the joy of our packed house. The four-person slam was won (decisively!) by Shira Erlichman.

Next week: the Voice himself, Harlym125, in his first feature at the Cantab. Expect surprises and special guests! The night will end with the last open qualifying slam for the Cantab team.

We kind of knew that Lynne Procope was going to be really, really good... Maybe you just thought Jme was being overdramatic? If so, and if you missed last night; shame on you. Lynne honored us with a full feature of nearly all new work, inspiring us and making us totally jealous all at once. Another full slam was won by Simone Beaubien over Shira Erlichmann in the final round. Special shout-out to New Jersey poets Conor and Chad Anderson, who stopped by to open mic and slam with us.

Next week: Chicago poet Molly Meacham stops by after hitting up NYC. This might be your only chance to see Molly outside of Chicago, so don't miss it.

Thursday, March 8, 2007

Last night, two-time National Individual Finalist Iyeoka Okoawo brought us, finally, a full feature of her work, holding the audience totally spellbound. Come back any time, Iyeoka! A totally packed slam was won by Brian S. Ellis. Just three open slams remain to qualify for the team!

Next week: amazing New York poet Lynne Procope. Not to be missed.

Friday, March 2, 2007

Another fine night at the Cantab this past Wednesday: a packed open mic full of strong regulars and rising stars was capped off with a feature from Chicago poet J.W. Baz, IWPS finalist and poet laureate of Apt. 2E. Baz delivered a healthy helping of his trademark "confessional swagger" over the muffled sounds of an unusually enthusiastic upstairs blues jam. The seven-person slam was won by Jme over Brian S. Ellis in the final round. If you think that final sounded like a barnburner, you should have seen the second round, where Jme edged out former MC Emeritus Michael Brown by 0.1. Hot! Hot!!

Next week: we're proud to present 2000 Cantab Slam Team member and all-around local rockstar Iyeoka Okoawo. An open poetry slam will follow the feature.

Saturday, February 24, 2007

It was almost too packed to breathe in the Cantab last Wednesday, you know that? I mean, we were stuffed in there like stuffing in a stuffy place. Seriously, if you're ever cold on a Wednesday night, you know where to be if you want to cuddle with someone. Our feature was Sonya Renee, who was totally awesome, and a scary-tough slam was won by 125 over first-time slammer Spak in the final round.

Come see us next week for Chicago poet and 2007 IWPS finalist J.W. Baz, plus an open slam.

Thursday, February 15, 2007

Ah, another Erotic Poetry Night at the Cantab. Not a mango in the joint, although there was plenty of Mommy, a few stripper jokes, and an ode to biodiesel. The First Annual Nappy Owl Award went to Jay, who, despite lacking any particularly creative bodily nicknames, did pull through with a hilariously disturbing piece about... Never mind. You really had to be there.

After the extended open mic, Sean Conlon brought us an enchantingly bitter set, perfect for those of us at a poetry reading in a bar on Valentine's Day. We missed you, Sean!

Next week: 2004 National Poetry Slam Individual Slam Champion, Def Poet, and umpteen-times NPS and IWPS finalist Sonya Renee will punch little holes in your heart with her high heels, then sew it all back up with a voice like a megaphone made of apple butter. Open slam to follow.

Thursday, February 8, 2007

Two weeks ago, the Boston Intercollegiate Slam Team showed off their hard work, finishing up the night with a hilarious group piece. The slam that night was won by Emily Griffin. Then, just last night, Def Poet and four-time National Poetry Slam finalist Rives gave us half an hour of remarkable storytelling. The Champion of Champions Slam followed, pitting challenger Dan Ames against defending champ Adam Stone. It took Adam eight rounds (and some close calls) to get four wins to Dan's three: wow! Thanks for a great show, guys!

Next week: our annual tradition of Erotic Poetry Night continues; bring your sexiest and/or dirtiest poems to the open mic. Then sit tight for a feature from the much-missed Sean Conlon. How better to spend your Valentine's Day?

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Last week, Brian Ellis featured for a packed house, showing off at the top of his slam game. Brian will represent us at IWPS this week in Vancouver. Good luck, Brian!

The season championship slam was won by Dan Ames over Jonathan Chin. Come back next week when both slammers will feature, along with Jamei Bauer and Jess Del Balzo, comprising Boston's first Intercollegiate Poetry Slam Team. See you there!

Thursday, January 18, 2007

Last night, Regie Gibson sweated, stomped, recited, and read until even the blues jam upstairs had to pause out of respect. The Cantab was packed to the gills and the hundred-odd folks who braved the cold weather found themselves a lot warmer, thanks to Regie. The first full slam of the year followed the feature, wherein Nate Leland rose to the top to beat Casey Rocheteau by .2 in the final round.

Next week: Brian Ellis, World Qualifier winner and the Cantab's representative to the Individual World Poetry Slam releases his new chapbook. This is your last chance to hear Brian before he leaves for IWPS in Vancouver!

Sunday, January 14, 2007

Len Germinara traveled all the way from the little island of Nantucket to bring us a solid page-and-stage feature. The poetry slam was won by first-timer Liz Kramer, who defeated veteran Eric Darby in the final round!

Next week: Regie Gibson, with an open slam. Come early if you want a seat (or want to get in at all). 'Nuff said.

Sunday, January 7, 2007

Last week, Mike McGee and Robbie Q rocked the mic with whale sounds, jump rope rhymes, and a poetic pantload of other hilarious stuff. Come back any time, guys! The slam was won by Jess Del Balzo, who ticked her first win over Joey Santosussio in his first Cantab slam.

Next Wednesday, come see Nantucket SlamMaster Len Germinara in his triumphant (but brief) return to the mainland.
