The Cantab Lounge: Archived News from 2005

Saturday, December 31, 2005

An intimate crowd soon found themselves warmed by the heady poetry of Gabrielle Bouliane at last Wednesday's reading. The subsequent jam-packed slam was won by Danny Balel in a squeaker over Brian. Thanks to everyone for another great year!

Join us next Wednesday to kick off 2006 with Seattle powerhouse and 2005 NPS Individual Finalist Christa Bell. Come see the woman who lit up the biggest stage in the country bring her intense and extraordinary work to our little basement.

Thursday, December 22, 2005

"The best open mic in the English-speaking language," as our feature termed it, was capped off by a fantastic extended show by none other than The Jack McCarthy, star of stage, screen, and television. It was a wonderful night and a great way to finish off the shortest day of the year. Thanks to those who made the trek out in the cold to bring us the biggest crowd of the season.

Next week: New York poet Gabrielle Bouliane returns home to see Mom (and to featured for us). Plus: the last open slam of the calendar year!

Sunday, December 18, 2005

After four rounds of knuckle-busting slam poetry, the Cantab Lounge selected Eric Darby to represent the venue at the 2006 Individual World Poetry Slam in Charlotte this February! Congratulations to Eric, as well as to our other three hard-working final poets: Adam Stone, Gary Hoare, and Sean Conlon.

Next week: take a night off from the hectic holiday countdown to come out and see Boston's best-loved poet, Jack McCarthy. He's in town from Seattle for this one night; don't miss your chance to hear a fine storyteller, comedian, and love poet who won't be back again for at least another year.

Sunday, December 11, 2005

Andrea Gibson stormed through town with an incredible feature this past week. For our part, the open mic put on a solid show and a pretty well-stacked slam ended with Erich Hagan taking top honors over Maya.

Next week: IWPS hopefuls Adam Stone, Sean Conlon, Gary Hoare, Eric Darby, Danny Balel, Tony Baldor, Audrey Holst, and Erich Hagan slam for the chance to represent the Cantab at the Individual World Poetry Slam in Charlotte this year. Come on out and heckle and cheer for your favorites!

Sunday, December 4, 2005

Last week we saw eight slammers battle it out in 3- and 2-minute slam rounds, IWPS-style. Adam Stone took top honors, but anything could happen on 12/14 when we carry these scores over to two more rounds. On the 14th, come see who advances to the finals and finally who becomes the one poet to represent the Cantab in Charlotte at IWPS this year!

Next week: four-time Denver slam champion Andrea Gibson earned herself a reputation as one of the Cantab’s favorite features last year. This week, hear why her honest, humble, and inspiring work makes her a poet not to be missed.

Saturday, November 26, 2005

Last Wednesday, an intimate crowd enjoyed a pre-Thanksgiving feast of poetry on film: Phil Hasouris and James Moore were on hand with the fifth season compilation tape of PLACES, their poetry television show. Thanks to all who came out in the cold to enjoy the special screening!

Next week: Round One of IWPS Slams. Brady Chalmbers, Gary Hoare, Adam Stone, Eric Darby, Erich Hagan, Philip Hasouris, Erin Jackson, Michael Brown, Danny Balel, Trevor Byrne Smith, Caoline Harvey, j*me, Caitlin Costello, Sean Conlon, Jared Paul, one-two-five, Jacob Carter, and Audrey are all qualfied to slam on this night, but only eight poets will advance to the 12/14 finals! Come out to watch, heckle, and cheer on as our local slammers battle it out in two rounds of slam.

Saturday, November 19, 2005

Last week's fine open mic, including a spotlight feature from Kim Johnson of San Francisco, was followed by a fine double feature from Douglas Bishop and Marc Goldfinger. A very exciting slam came down to four female semi-finalists in the second round; Audrey took her first slam against Dawn Gabriel, Jamei, and Samantha Jane Scolamiero.

Next week: a special screening of the fifth season of PLACES, Philip Hasouris and James Moore's Brockton poetry TV show. The show includes Cantab favorites Richard Cambridge, Samantha Jane Scolamiero, Melissa Guillet, Michael Mack, and Caroline Harvey, among others. Also, don't forget that this will be our last open slam before IWPS qualifiers. Don't miss your last chance to qualify for the 11/30 slam!

Saturday, November 12, 2005

Oh, last week we had one of the warmest, lovey-doviest, and most red-headed nights in the Cantab that basement has seen for years. Dawn Gabriel made a spectacular birthday appearance as guest host on the open mic, followed by a fantastic feature from fellow '05 team member Caroline Harvey. The slam was also packed, with both new and old faces; Gary Hoare came out on top to claim one of the last open slams left before the slam to choose our IWPS representative.

Next week: a double feature from Douglas Bishop and Marc Goldfinger. Expect dual-voice pieces and new work from a Cantab regular!

Saturday, November 5, 2005

Did you miss us? Slamnews was unreachable for a few weeks, but we're back in the game again. If you tried to get a hold of us, don't fret, because everything is running smoothly: drop an email to cantab@slamnews.com and we'll get back to you ASAP.

In the meantime, of course, we still had a show. Congratulations to our new Champion of Champions, Adam Stone, who pulled out a victory over j*me by 0.1 in the last round of the slam last week!

Next Wednesday: come out in the cold to have Caroline Harvey, famed HBO Def Jam poet and 2005 Cantab Slam Team member, warm you up.

Sunday, October 23, 2005

This past week, nationally renowned performance poet Adam Stone brought us a killer feature show, including guest stars Star St. Germain, Sean Conlon, Omoisele Okoawo, and Samantha Jane Scolamiero. The second semi-final slam was won by 125, who'll face off against Adam next week in the championship slam for the $50 prize, bragging rights, and a shot at the Champion of Champions title!

Tuesday, October 19, 2005

Last night, Rich Villar read both slam poetry and sestinas to an intimate and impressed Cantab crowd. The slam was won by Adam Stone, who will return on October 26 to slam for the season championship.

Since we really can't get enough of Adam Stone, we asked him to feature next week, too; if you've never stayed for the slam, you've missed your chance to see more than once piece of Adam's in a night. Next week, for a change, Adam will perform in the featured poet slot. Come see one of the Cantab's longtime regular slammers take the spotlight without a three-minute time limit.

Tuesday, October 11, 2005

Wednesday, September 7, 2005

What a night we had last week! Samantha Jane Scolamiero hosted the Cantab's first ever Head-to-Head Haiku Slam, complete with Karate-Kid style headbands, ritualized judging practices, and a whole lot of fun. Thanks to everyone for all the great support the team got at the National Poetry Slam this year. Details of our week (well, most of it) can be found at the Cantab team diary.

Over the last two weeks, the Cantab has welcomed solid features from both Philip Hasouris (stellar Cantab Slam Team alternate) and Michael McDonough (off to pursue his Master's very soon!). Caitlin and Sean were our last two slam winners.

Our next feature will be the Cantab's first ever all-star invitational Head-To-Head Haiku Slam, with Samantha Jane Scolamiero hosting an all-star cast of local haiku performers. Hope to see you there.

Thursday, August 4, 2005

Last night we saw the home team pull it together to finally bring the title home: congratulations to the 2005 Cantab Slam Team, this year's 2005 New England Slam League champions! Big ups also to the Worcester and Lizard Lounge teams, who tied for the runner-up spot. See you next season!

Next Wednesday: Philip Hasouris, Brockton performance poet, poetry television show director, and alternate for the 2005 Cantab Slam Team holds down the fort with a full length feature. Special guest Michael Brown will host this evening's show.

Special note: Wednesday, August 10, marks the night of the first bout of the National Poetry Slam in Albuquerque, New Mexico! Follow along with the scores here or watch the Cantab team diary to see what's going on at the biggest Nationals yet.

Thursday, July 29, 2005

Thanks to everyone who came (and stayed!) for a fantastic open mic this Wednesday. The Cantab Slam Team pulled out all the stops in a solid feature for a great crowd. Good luck to the team at Nationals this August!

Next week: the New England Slam League Finals, your last chance to see the '05 slam teams before they head to Albuquerque for Nationals! Come cheer on (or heckle) NESL's top teams in a match to end the season. Note that there is a special $5 admission for this week's 3-team bout to help support the teams' trips to Nationals.

Monday, July 18, 2005

Were you in the house for the big slam this past Wednesday? Returning Champion of Champions Erin Jackson was at last defeated by this season's challenger, j*me, in an extremely tight best-of-seven that went for nine rounds. Congratulations to J*me, our new Champion of Champions!

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

Worcester was in the house in force last Wednesday for Jon Wolf's wonderful feature. The semi-final slam was won by j*me, who will return for the season championship slam.

Tonight: nationally recognized queer poet Ragan Fox burns up the place. Ragan's feature will be followed by Adam Stone versus j*me vying for the season championship!

Sunday, July 3, 2005

Last week, Nicole Terez had a packed crowd hanging on her every word for her intense feature. Afterwards, Adam Stone took the semi-final slam, after narrowly beating Danny Balel in a tough first round. Adam will return to slam on July 13 for a crack at the season championship.

Next weeK: Worcester slammaster and all-around good guy Jon Wolf brings his (figurative [presumably]) tap shoes. Jon's feature will be followed by a semi-final slam with Trevor Byrne Smith, Erich Hagan, Caroline Harvey, and j*me.

Thursday, June 23, 2005

Yesterday's feature, Lea Deschenes, brought us a solid selection of work to show us just what it takes to make four slam teams and be nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Lea followed an excellent open mic (with lots of visiting travelers), and the packed final slam of the spring season finished off our evening. Congrats to j*me, who takes the last spot in the spring semi-finals.

Next week: Nicole Terez takes the stage, plus Philip Hasouris, Michael Brown, Adam Stone, and Danny Balel compete for a shot at the season championship in the first semi-final slam.

Saturday, June 18, 2005

This past Wednesday, we held an extended open mic in lieu of a feature. Afterwards, a highly competitive, packed-to-the-gills slam was won by 2005 Cantab Slam Team member Caroline Harvey; notable mention to Chuck Baker, who showed the Cantab some of the best slam freestyle we've seen.

Next show: quantum redhead Lea Deschenes makes the trip from Worcester.

Saturday, June 11, 2005

This week, regular Matt Leclair brought us a full feature of strong, Cantab-influenced poetry, with nods to many a poet in the room and unique imagery that only Matt can bring; congrats also to our feature on the release of his first chapbook, Before I Was better. The open slam was won by Eric Hagan.

Next Wednesday: Detroit-based nationwide sensation Future makes us a stop on his northeast tour.

Friday, June 3, 2005

Two Wednesdays ago, Melissa Guillet brought us a half-hour of fine poetry, performed; just this past week, the Cantab slam team hosted a New England Slam League match where Worcester took top honors over the Lizard Lounge and the Cantab. Congrats to the Worcester team, as well as the two-weeks-ago slam winner, Trevor from Providence.

This Wednesday: come see longtime listener and open mic poet Matt LeClair. Open slam to follow.

Wednesday, May 25, 2005

Next week: come see Providence's "dancer of words," Melissa Guillet, in her debut Cantab feature. Our fifth open slam in the 8x8 series will follow.

Thursday, May 12, 2005

Last night, we had the chance to see the Jeff Robinson Trio, regular jazz group at the Lizard Lounge, back the poets at the Cantab! Special thanks go to Jeff Robinson, the Lizard slammaster, for bringing out the band. Following a spotlight feature from Karuna Tanahashi, the night's slam was an excellent preview of the Lizard Lounge team slam finals show this Sunday, pitting Ross Johnson against Adam Stone in the final round. Congrats to Adam, who walked away with the win.

Next week: Dallas powerhouse poet Amy Weaver is expected to burn the place up with her hot hot words! (In the event that the venue is still standing after the feature, an open slam will follow.)

Wednesday, May 11, 2005

Last week, Kit Yan brought us a solid show of wit, wisdom, and idiosyncratic storytelling. Good luck to Kit in the upcoming Lizard Lounge team qualifiers!

Tonight: the Lizard Lounge slammaster himself joins us with his improv jazz troupe as the Jeff Robinson Trio backs the Cantab open mic. Don't miss your chance to see both Boston slams unified on the same stage! The open mic will be followed by the second open slam of the series.

Tuesday, May 3, 2005

Last week saw Florida's famous Tod Caviness give us a feature solid in both poetry and performance. Tod's feature was followed by the Champion of Champions slam, where Erin Jackson won for the third straight time against a season's challenger!! Big thanks to Ansel Appleton, who went eight rounds against Erin before finally going under.

This week: Kit Yan has been making a name at slams and shows all over town. Don't miss your chance to see this rising local star!

Friday, April 22, 2005

This past Wednesday, Dawn Saylor stopped by to emote and entertain. Thanks again to Dawn for making us a stop on her New York to Austin tour! The season championship was won by Ansel Appleton, last year's NPS Rookie of the Year.

Come back next week to hear Tod Caviness, one of Orlando's Coolest People (according to Axis Magazine) and a long-standing southern host and poet. After the feature, Ansel will return to the slam stage to challenge current Champion of Champions Erin Jackson for the title!

  • Dawn Gabriel

A cutthroat, four-round slam saw beloved regulars Erich Hagan, Gary Hoare, and Phil Hasouris eliminated at the end of the night. Special thanks to Alvin Lau (all the way from Chicago!) and Emily Kagen, who performed the warm-up poems for each round.

Next week: you thought the venue would cool down after team slams? Not for National Poetry Month! Come catch NYC/Kalamazoo veteran Dawn Saylor on her No Sleep Til Austin tour. Dawn's feature will be followed by the season championship slam, pitting Ansel Appleton against Gary Hoare in a best-of-5.

Thursday, April 7, 2005

This week's team slam saw twelve poets in a two-round, no-story-left-untold battle to advance to the finals! At the end of the night, only eight hopefuls remained. Big ups go to Raphael Luckom, Erin Jackson, and jeff taylor, who performed valiantly but will not advance. Special thanks also to Adam Stone, who, despite a second-place finish, elected not to continue and stepped aside to allow another poet to take his spot.

Next week's invite-only Team Slam, Round Two will include the following poets:

Simone Beaubien, Philip Hasouris, Erich Hagan, Eric Darby
Ryk McIntyre, Gary Hoare, Dawn Gabriel, Caroline Harvey

Only five poets will make the team! Come cheer on and heckle your favorite slammers!
Note: special $5 cover for this show to help fund the team's trip to the National Poetry Slam

Tuesday, April 5, 2005

Last week, Samantha Jane Scolamiero brought us a feature to be remembered. The last-chance qualifying open slam was won by Philip Hasouris, longtime champion of poetry and host of the new Bridgewater poetry series.

This Wednesday, April 6: Cantab Team Slam, Round One! This year's open slam winners are invited back to a two-round battle royale to vie for a spot on the 2005 Cantab Slam Team. The team will attend the National Poetry Slam this August in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Sunday, March 27, 2005

This past Wednesday, Kevin Mahoney (yes, the real Kevin Mahoney) performed a full half-hour of his work, complete with full-color glossy posters, improv skits, and costume changes. As expected, the night was truly a unique experience; however, if you missed it, Kevin's book captures much of the feel and is, of course, still available.

The second semi-final slam was won in the final tie-breaking round, with Gary Hoare taking the win, despite Adam Stone's polished performance and a remarkable non-violation of the prop rule by Erich Hagan. Come back on April 20 to see Gary take on Ansel Appleton for the season championship.

This week: Samantha Jane Scolamiero, 2004 Cantab Slam Team member and beloved regular, takes the stage for her debut Cantab feature. Samantha's feature will be followed by an open slam: winner will be the last qualifier for the April 6 Cantab team tryout slam!

Sunday, March 20, 2005

Last week, Chris O'Carroll brought us a selection of his short humorous works, including two minutes of high-speed dirty limericks (possibly a new Cantab record). The semi-final slam was won by Ansel, who took down Ryk and Brady on his way to the season championship on April 20.

This Wednesday: Kevin Mahoney joins us for the first Cantab feature of the spring. Come celebrate the release of his new book, Serendipity Is a Son of a Bitch. A semi-final slam will follow, featuring Gary Hoare, Adam Stone, Eric Darby, and Erich Hagan. The winner will face Ansel Appleton four weeks from now!

Monday, March 14, 2005

If you missed us last Wednesday, you missed Erin Jackson, Kit Wallach, Shira Erlichmann, Sara Brickman, and coach Casey Rochateau bringing the house down with the slam poems they'll be taking to College Nationals. Watch out for these women when they get out of college and start slamming locally... Wait, they already are. Damn! You can follow the ladies to Pittsburgh this spring, or just purchase a copy of their book to help them get there.

This week: the long-lost Chris O'Carroll returns from the world of acting to perform poetry for us instead. Bravo!

Friday, March 4, 2005

Last Wednesday, Tim Cook brought us a taste of the Green Mill, but claimed he just didn't win slams in Chicago. Move to Boston, Tim! Our slam was won by Eric Darby, who qualifies for slam team tryouts on April 6.

Next week's feature will be the five-woman Amherst Slam Team, en route to Brave New Voices' college national slams! The last open slam in this series will follow.

Sunday, February 27, 2005

Last week, IWPS finalist and Cantab slam regular Ansel Appleton finally brought us a half-hour feature. The packed-to-the-gills open slam was won by Adam Stone, who took down fellow redhead Dawn Gabriel by two-tenths of a point to gain a spot at tryouts for the '06 Cantab Slam Team.

Next Wednesday, come see Tim Cook, performance poet straight from the heart of slam: The Green Mill in Chicago. The feature will be followed by an open slam and one of the last chances to qualify for slam team tryouts.

Friday, February 18, 2005

It was standing room only at the Erotic Poetry Open Mic this past Wednesday. Thanks to everyone for crowding into our basement on such a wet, sultry February night; it turns out sex really does sell. (Who knew?) Our open mic was followed by a five-person slam that was won by Gary Hoare. Special thanks to Nagano, who was visting Boston from Japan and stopped by to read in our slam!

Next week: just in case you've been under a rock and missed the Individual World Poetry Slam in Worcester this month, somebody should tell you that next week's feature, Ansel Appleton, not only made finals at IWPS, but also slammed for the Cantab at the National Poetry Slam last year and won the '05 NPS Rookie Slam. Go on, drag yourself away from that gallon of ice cream you've been pigging out on since Valentine's Day and come support a longtime Cantab poet on the up and up.

Friday, February 11, 2005

Last week saw Aaron Enskat and DC stave off another New England blizzard by heating up the Cantab mic! The slam was taken by Jai the Lemming in his first Boston slam victory.

Next week: get out your fishnets and leather chaps. The Cantab's annual Erotic Poetry Open Mic will cure your Valentine's Day blues and give you the special warm little fuzzies. Bring a date (or two, or three)!

Friday, February 4, 2005

This past week, Kat Sanford and Ed Zepplin warmed up the crowd with spotlight features just before Versiz took the stage. What a night! The epic slam was finally won by Ed Zepplin, who ended up doing even more poems than the feature to earn his $10.

Next week: Normal poets (that's Normal, Illinois, folks) DC and Aaron Enskat turn a double feature for the Cantab crowd.

Monday, January 31, 2005

What we thought would be an intimate gathering of blizzard-brave souls turned out to be a surprisingly busy evening. Thanks to everyone who came out to see us last Wednesday, especially our slammers and judges! The slam was won by Caroline Harvey, putting in a surprise appearance from L.A.

This week: come see Jamaal (Versiz) May, remarkable Detroit slammer, stopping by the Cantab en route to snowy Worcester for the Individual World Poetry Slam next week.

Wednesday, January 26, 2005

Last week, Richard Cambridge gave us a tight performance, both performed and read, from his fantastic new publication, A Book of Books. The slam was won by Ryk McIntyre.

IMPORTANT: TONIGHT'S FEATURE HAS BEEN POSTPONED! Due to the heavy snowfall, tonight's feature, The Jeff Robinson Trio, will not perform tonight: look for them at the cantab in the spring! Open mic and slam are still on for the evening.

Sunday, January 16, 2005

Did you miss us last Wednesday? If so, you might be wondering what lit up the sky over Central Square around ten o'clock: Sonya Renee, NPS '04 Individual Champion, pulled out all the stops for us in her explosive feature. In another full slam, J*me pulled out the win. Special thanks to Kimberly Zisa who came up from D.C. to slam with us.

This week's feature will be Boston performance poetry legend Richard Cambridge, reading from his long-awaited and just-published book.

Friday, January 7, 2005

This past week, Andrea Gibson kept us all warm in the blizzard with an absolutely stellar feature to kick off the new year. In a packed-to-the-gills open slam, Ansel Appleton just squeaked out a win over Ryk McIntyre.

Next week: come see Sonya Renee, activist, educator, and, by the way, NPS '04 Individual Champion. Open slam to follow.

Wednesday, January 5, 2005

Last week, Carla Schwartz entertained us with her first full-lenth Cantab feature. In the slam, Erin Jackson confidently defeated Adam Stone to keep her title for a third season. Congratulations, Erin!
