The Cantab Lounge: Archived News from 2004 Wednesday, December 29, 2004 Last week, Regie Gibson was nothing short of expected. Too bad for you if you missed it! The season championship slam was won by Adam Stone. Tonight, come see local favorite Carla Schwartz in her first-ever Cantab feature. In tonight's slam, Adam Stone will challenge reigning Champion of Champions Erin Jackson for the title in a best-of-seven head-to-head! Friday, December 17, 2004 Following an open mic notable for regulars and out-of-state visitors, Matt Ernst brought his Ann Arbor style to the Cantab in an intense feature. The exceedingly rowdy semi-final slam was won by Adam Stone over jeff taylor. Next week: Regie Gibson, prolific performance artist and author, blends blues, jazz, and hip-hop into performance poetry in his spectacular one-man show. Come see why Regie placed second individually at the 1998 National Poetry Slam and has been a nationally renowned performer ever since. Friday, December 10, 2004 This week, Paulie Lipman and Ian Dougherty followed a great open mic, performing a tag-team double-feature for a packed house. The semi-final slam was won by j*me, who advances to the season finals on 12/22. Next Wednesday, come see Matt Ernst, repeat slam champion and staple of the Ann Arbor poetry scene, at his debut New England appearance. Don’t miss Matt’s quirky, truly unique brand of performed poetry, straight from one of the oldest slam venues in the country. The feature will be followed by our second semi-final slam. Sunday, December 5, 2004 Last week's slam reduced the field of six poets to just one who will represent the Cantab Lounge at IWPS this February! Congratulations to Michael Brown, who took the final round by a hair over Erin Jackson. Sunday, November 14, 2004 This past Wednesday, Phil Hasouris and James Moore brought us a private screening the third and fourth seasons of PLACES, their poetry television show. It was an all-star night as dozens of past PLACES features packed the audience! In the slam, Adam Stone won out over jeff taylor and first-time reader Valerie. Next week: wordsmith David Surrette will feature, bringing his newly published book. Open slam will follow; this will be the last open slam until the New Year, and the last chance to qualify to slam for the Cantab’s IWPS spot! Monday, November 8, 2004 Been watching baseball for the last two weeks instead of visiting the Cantab? If so, you missed Corrina Bain bringing the house down at the send-off to her national tour, as well as Terry Creech on a rare visit to the Northeast. (Congrats to our slam winners from those two weeks, Raphael Luckom and Michael Brown.)Then, just last week, Eric Zork Alan gave a fun, intimate feature to a captivated crowd. This week, brave the dropping temperatures and come out for a cozy feature from Phil Hasouris: we’ll show the compilation tape from the third season of PLACES, Brockton Cable’s poetry television show. Taped poets include Katie Fowley, Craig Nelson, Douglas Bishop, and Nicole Terez! Open slam will follow. Tuesday, October 19, 2004 Last week, Michael Zack entertained and educated us with poems about his life as a doctor, traveler, and poet, as well as with stories about the Old Days at the Cantab Lounge. The slam was won by newcomer Erich Hagan. This Wednesday: don’t miss nationally renowned and locally revered Corrina Bain in her last Boston appearance before her nationwide tour! Open slam to follow. Sunday, October 10, 2004 This past Wednesday, we had a killer open mic, followed by Rachel Kann absolutely rocking the house, L.A. style. The slam was won by Dawn Gabriel. Monday, September 27, 2004 Last week, Ryk McIntyre presented us with a great feature, performing both old favorites and brand new hits to create a mix that made his birthday one to remember. The first open slam in the fall series was won by Jen, a first-time Cantab slammer! Next week: Yvette Leaphart, Amazon slammer and truly inspiring performer, brings her brand of per formance and poetry to the Cantab stage. Open slams continue. Friday, September 17, 2004 This past Wednesday, Adam Rubinstein made us his last stop before NYC with a solid feature that m atched his sense of humor with his sense of the surreal. In the Champion of Champions slam, challenger E rin Jackson edged out defending champ Marlon Carey in six rounds. Congratulations, Erin! Next week: Ryk McIntyre, still high on birthday cake, in a celebratory feature. Open slams begin again. Tuesday, September 14, 2004 Last week, Susan Donnelly had us spellbound with her poems and anecdotes about everyday life. Lat er, Erin Jackson took the slam for the season championship! This Wednesday: Adam Rubinstein, coach of this year's Amherst collegiate slam team, takes the stage, followed by Erin Jackson vs. Marlon Carey in a head-to-head for the Champion of Champions title. Friday, September 3, 2004 A quiet night this week with some stellar first-timers at the Cantab open mic. The semi-final slam was won by Simone Beaubien over Gary Hicks and Harris Gardner. Next week: Susan Donnelly, widely published Boston poet, reads her work (and reads it well). After the f eature, Erin Jackson and Simone Beaubien face off for the season championship, fifty bucks, and a chance at the Champion of Champions title. Friday, August 27, 2004 If you missed Sue Savoy's feature this past Wednesday, you missed a cab ride in the Dominican Republic, some good fun at Bukowski's expense, and J*me pulling out a win in the slam over interim Cantab waiter Adam Stone: all in all, a night to remember at the Cantab Lounge. Next week: Harris Gardner, Gary Hicks, Simone Beaubien, and J*me compete in our second semi-final slam. Winner earns $25 and a chance to face Erin Jackson in the season championship on 9/8! Tuesday, August 24, 2004 Last week's semi-final was taken by Erin Jackson. Erin advances to the season championship on September 1. For the team's NPS diary, click here. Tuesday, July 27, 2004 This past Wednesday, three teams braved the DNC traffic to attend the NESL Finals. The first ever New England Slam League season ends with the Lizard Lounge in the top slot, followed by Worcester in second and the Cantab Lounge in third. Thanks to all who came, watched, and supported the league. We'll definitely be doing this next year. Our next feature: Tony Brown, long-time Worcester poet and slammer, agreed to be our feature while our teams attend the 2004 National Poetry Slam in St. Louis, MO. If you can't make it to NPS, Tony will give you a little taste of what you're missing. Tuesday, July 27, 2004 If you missed last week, you missed Prabakar Thyagarajan in his debut feature; excellent writer and careful listener, Prabakar may also be the most gracious and humble feature we've had this year... Following the feature, Morris Stegosaurus won the slam in a hard-fought bout, just squeaking out over special guest Tai Cunningham, slammaster of Verbal Ink in Jacksonville, FL. Thursday, June 17, 2004 The first NESL night of the season kicked off with a packed open mic: big thanks to both regulars and irregulars who started us off with a bang! The debut NESL bout was just about as crazy as expected, all coming down to a tiebreaker between the Cantab and Worcester, with Providence at a strong third. Thursday, June 10, 2004 Last night, Evert Eden showed us all why he's both nationally and internationally known for his touching, funny, and sometimes bordering-on-obscene performance poetry. It was truly one of the wackiest open mic nights we'd seen at the Cantab in a long time, and Evert followed it up perfectly (special thanks go to Morris Stegosaurus for helping us book him for this gig). The slam was won by Ansel Appleton over Dylan, a first-time slammer at the Cantab who we certainly hope to see again. Friday, May 28, 2004 A double treat this week: Lani Radack gave us a high-energy full-length feature, preceeded by Team San Jose's Caroline Harvey doing a spotlight feature in the open mic. Saturday, May 22, 2004 Mahogany Browne, co-champion of the Bar 13 slam and nationwide slammer, gave us all a heckuva poetry education last week. (Extra thanks go to Nate Van Til and his beatboxing backup for Mahogany's first piece.) And big congratulations are due to our new Champion of Champions, Marlon Carey; in a tight seven rounds in head-to-head-slam against Simone Beaubien, Marlon emerged victorious! Thursday, May 13, 2004 Framingham High totally invaded the venue and the open mic last night! How cool is that? Our features, Douglas Bishop and Marc D. Goldfinger, gave us a one-of-a-kind experience, reading two-voice poems that we may never have a chance to hear the same way again (thanks, guys), and then it was Marlon Carey over Adam Stone in four rounds of intense head-to-head slam. May 19, next week: Mahogany Browne, who's been ripping up team slam finals from NYC to Worcester, brings us her fantastic brand of polished performance poetry, followed by Marlon Carey vs. returning champ Simone Beaubien in a best-of-seven Champion of Champions slam. Friday, May 7, 2004 As expected, Morris Stegosaurus put on a heckofa show for us this week, combining hilarity and introspection, all wrapped up in his particular brand of incongruous imagery. Marlon Carey then edged out Ansel in the semi-final slam to claim the second finals spot. May 12 feature: Douglas Bishop and Marc D. Goldfinger trade poems in a co-feature, followed by Adam Stone and Marlon in a best-of-5 for the season slam championship. Be there! Thursday, April 30, 2004 Did you miss us this week?
